Now that I’ve painted all these portraits, I’m longing to paint space. I think focusing on space for a while will make me a stronger portrait painter. I look at the space/light in a Vilhelm Hammershoi or Susan Bennerstrom painting and want to weep! The other thought that won’t go away is that the lower the chroma or saturation, the stronger the emotion. I wanted to make a personal painting by painting faces but now I feel like I can express interiority better through light, emptiness and depth of space. Solitude is better expressed through figures absorbed in their own thoughts or turned away.
